CNN: What do you tell people when they ask you why you run?
Adharanand Finn: I usually shrug and say I don’t know — because unless you also run, it’s hard for me to explain why I do it. It’s like trying to describe the taste of a strawberry to someone who has never eaten one. It’s much better to give them a strawberry to taste. But if pushed, I’ll say it makes me feel happy, strong and alive. Not too many things can achieve that so easily.
The same is true for me. Running makes hard days easier to bear, and happy days even brighter. It gives me confidence and makes me feel strong. I plan to keep running until I’m old and gray.
I also love road races. The training part is hard work, but with each run you see signs of progress toward your goal. And the race itself feeds my competitive side. It feels amazing to cross the finish line after a really tough race. Completing a race is truly a metaphor for life. The tough times always pass if you push hard and never give up.
